Headline: How Residents Of Maiduguri Cope with The Hot Weather

By : Nkiru Jude

Residents of Maiduguri, a city in northeastern Nigeria, have developed various ways to cope with the intense heat, especially during the dry season when temperatures can soar above 40°C (104°F). Here are some common strategies they use:
1. Hydration and Diet.
Drinking plenty of water: Staying hydrated is a priority. Residents often carry water with them or drink local beverages like kunu (a millet-based drink) and zobo (hibiscus tea).
Eating light meals: People tend to eat lighter, cooler meals such as fruits, vegetables, and locally available foods that don't require heavy cooking.
2. Clothing and Accessories
Light, loose clothing: Wearing light-colored and breathable fabrics like cotton to allow air circulation and reduce heat absorption.
Head coverings: Traditional caps, scarves, or turbans are worn to protect the head and face from direct sunlight.
3. Shelter and Architecture
Thick-walled buildings: Traditional houses are built with materials like mud or cement blocks which provide natural insulation against heat.
Courtyards and shaded areas: Many homes have open courtyards or shaded verandas where people can sit during the hottest parts of the day.
Zana mats and local fans: These are used indoors to help keep living spaces cool.
4. Daily Routine Adjustments
Activity scheduling: Outdoor work or errands are often done early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler.
Siestas: Some people rest during the hottest part of the day, especially between noon and 3 p.m.
5. Use of Technology
Fans and air conditioners: Where electricity is available, residents use electric fans or air conditioners.
Solar solutions: Due to inconsistent power supply, solar panels and solar-powered fans are becoming more common.
6. Community Solutions
Tree planting and shade creation: Local communities plant trees around homes and along streets to provide shade.
Water points: In some neighborhoods, especially during the dry season, boreholes or community water points help provide relief and hydration.
